Shawn Booth may be best known for winning the heart of Canadian Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe, but the Nashville-based personal trainer has built a successful following based on health and wellness. Booth leads hundreds of fitness fans in pop-up workouts across the U.S. and his new fitness app and community hub, Booth Camp by Shawn Booth, launches later this month.

Mediaplanet: What do you think is the most important factor when it comes to reaching your fitness goals?

Shawn Booth: Consistency. If you have a solid week but then a crazy weekend or miss a couple workouts, you need to get right back to where you left off. It’s too easy for people to take one bad day and turn it into two bad days and then a bad month. It’s about keeping momentum.

MP: How do you stay committed to fitness while travelling or on holiday?

SB: You don’t need a gym to get results. You can do many different exercises with bodyweight only. I travel with a couple of resistance bands. If you can’t find a gym, just do 20 minutes of a full body workout wherever you are. Also, I recommend wearing a fitness watch, something that can track your steps and give you reminders, so you stay on the move. We live in an age where there are many healthy options on menus — make healthy choices when eating out.

MP: How did you stay fit while filming The Bachelorette?

SB: There’s no gym in the mansion. We had to do our own thing in the backyard. There were a couple of personal trainers in our season, so I brought some resistance bands, someone brought a pair of dumbbells. It was a little challenging, but whenever we had a chance to workout, we took full advantage.

MP: Men often believe they have to make drastic lifestyle changes to get in shape. Do you think that’s true?

SB: There needs to be a healthy balance. If you want to reach some high goals, you’ll have to cut out not sleeping much and drinking a lot. But I think it’s very healthy to have a nice balance in your life. I recommend active rest days and setting goals for yourself to eat clean for a few days and then have a cheat meal. You can have a light beer, like Michelob Ultra. You can still go out with your buddies and get results you want. Once they start getting into a routine, people realize it’s not that hard.

MP: What advice would you give to someone looking to take the next step?

SB: It’s about setting goals. Switch up what you’re doing. Try a new gym in the area, try a new fitness class, try and work out with friends or find someone with the same goals. Sign up for a race or a hike or something you can put on your calendar to make sure you’re doing what you need to meet the goal. Then get out there and do it.
